Four presenters took what many of us know of as a regional conflict which we call the “French and Indian War” involving the British and French Empires, as well as several indigenous nations and confederacies, and opened our eyes to a wider world conflict.
History Center Announces Honorees for 31st Annual History Makers Award Dinner
The Senator John Heinz History Center – the Smithsonian’s home in Pittsburgh – will recognize distinguished Pittsburghers for their exceptional contributions to the history of Western Pennsylvania, the nation, and the world at the 31st Annual History Makers Award Dinner on Thursday, May 16, at 6:30 p.m., at The Westin Pittsburgh.

Bushy Run Charter Day Through Pictures
On March 12, the Bushy Run Battlefield Heritage Society hosted the 243rd birthday of Pennsylvania when King Charles II granted a charter to William Penn. Two Hundred and twenty five guest including adults and a large amount of children were present.

The Jimmy Stewart Museum invites all interested video essayists to submit audiovisual scholarship to its inaugural Video Essay Showcase. The panel will consider works on any theme or concept that relates to the life and/or work of Hollywood actor James Stewart (1908-1997).
Woodville Announces Porch Restoration Project
If you’ve been to Woodville, you know the iconic front porch with its decorative lattice. Like any older building, Woodville needs periodic maintenance. Right now, its graceful front porch is in desperate need of restoration and so we are seeking grants and donations to do this work for which the estimate is $42,000.
VIDEO: Rosedale Remembered–A Commemoration of Shame and Commitment to Change
On September 7, 2023, a capacity crowd gathered at the Heritage Discovery Center to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Rosedale incident, in which Johnstown’s mayor ordered all Black people who hadn’t lived in Johnstown for at least seven years to leave. More than 2,000 people were displaced from their homes in response to the racist edict.

The Young Preservationists Association (YPA) of Pittsburgh has recognized Richard Burkert, former president and CEO of JAHA, with its Preservationist of the Year Award!
History Center Extends Free Admission for Kids
This holiday season, the Heinz History Center, Western Pennsylvania Sports Museum, and Fort Pitt Museum are offering free admission for kids aged 17 and under, now through Dec. 31, 2023. Free admission for kids is generously supported by community partners UPMC and UPMC Health Plan in November and Howard Hanna Real Estate Services in December.

The Renaissance Fakes of Pittsburgh
Nuhu Osman Attah tells the story of how Helen Clay Frick saved the University of Pittsburgh fine arts program which included a new building to house the program, the Frick Fine Arts Building in Oakland. Art provided by Helen Clay Frick in the museum was discovered to be fakes!

Cowboys on the North Shore, Indians at the Point
There are no official original tribes living in Pennsylvania anymore. Most were sent to Oklahoma, some to New York and Ontario. The people I met were brought to the park by the Fort Pitt Museum and Heinz History Center to share their culture with us for a weekend.
