The New Pittsburgh Exposition is a digital platform and online magazine curated to educate and connect people to art, history, and culture throughout western Pennsylvania.

This all started when two friends, Randy and Brian, began touring their favorite museums together. Through their journeys, they were often asked where someone could find a list of these museums. At the time, that information wasn’t available in one succinct place anywhere. Until now!

Our mission is to support our community and accomplish providing these resources through media coverage, including our very own podcasts and blog, and through providing access to a robust directory of museums, galleries, historic places, cultural sites, and creative spaces. The New Pittsburgh Exposition is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit which is currently run entirely by volunteers, including our board, and is sustained by your generous support.

history of the (new) pittsburgh exposition

In 2023, our organization formerly known as PGH Museums, underwent a rebranding as The (New) Pittsburgh Exposition (or simply “Pittsburgh Exposition”) inspired by the Pittsburgh expositions of the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, these large events brought in exhibits from all across the country and attracted people from all over our region. It was like Pittsburgh’s own local version of an annual world’s fair. The expositions were held in a large exposition hall where Point State Park is located today along the Allegheny River. These events had a wide reach with advertisements landing in papers across the region, even reaching into Ohio, and would bring in as many as ten thousand people a day to see the show.

Exposition Hall served many purposes after the days of the expositions. At different stages the building served as a music hall, a hockey arena, and eventually as a machine shop and garage for the city. The building was demolished in 1951 for the development of Point State Park. We hope to keep the history and spirit of Exposition Hall and the Western Pennsylvania Exposition Society (commonly called Pittsburgh Exposition) alive in our own way by adopting the name and continuing to share our regions art, museums, culture, exhibitions, and other events through our own modern digital channels (and beyond) today.
